Number of Malaysian Tourists Drops

Padang:The number of Malaysian tourists visiting Bukittinggi in Padang, West Sumatera, has dropped following the earthquake that struck the area on September 30 last year. From 1.500 Malaysian tourists, only 40 percent visit the province every month since then. "Although we have intensified promotional programs in Malaysia, it is still not working. When we mention the word Padang, they say they are scared of earthquakes," said the West Sumatra Association of the Indonesia Tours and Travel Agencies deputy chief, B. Rafles, yesterday.

Malaysian tourists who normally go to Bukittinggi, Rafles said, now ask for packages to visit Bandung. "So we have to take them to Bandung, even though there is barely any profit for us," Rafles said. However, he said, that was better than losing customers.
